I'll admit to being a little disappointed after Jamie's talk in the earnings call about this being another step in the "tech led reimagination" that it basically just boils down to a different way to do what most custom item buyers/sellers are already doing - just passing the information through messages, which may or may not be received and which still may require a lot of back and forth to iron things out. I think this is a step in the right direction, and something ebay should have done years ago, but I just hope by the time it comes to the US, ebay will have made it a more robust and effective tool.

Maybe the seller could retain one day handling, but the countdown would not begin until "x" number of days after the order has been placed. Some items are quickly personalized, but others require additional time after the order has been placed. Hopefully they will use the UK rollout to make improvements, not only to messaging, but to things like handling and delivery time frames. I'd be interested to hear what sellers of custom/personalized items think of the item specific solution eBay has chosen for this glad it's rolling out in the UK first, because it seems like what they are rolling out is incredibly basic. Hopefully they can get those messaging issues sorted out before rolling the new feature out further. However, presumably because eBay's messaging system blocks messages with personal contact info, the seller does not receive the personalization entered by the buyer and instead gets a message that says " we’re unable to process the buyers message, please reach out to the buyer.” They sell personalized party invitations which need the buyer to enter an email address and/or phone number for their guests to RSVP. When I first heard about this, I was concerned that relying on the eBay message system could present problems - and apparently it already has for one seller on Twitter. That message will then be sent to the seller through the eBay messaging system Basically it will add a new item specific sellers can use to enable personalization which will then show a text box on the listing for the buyer to put their custom message in.
